409: Brevetto-Auer. 1895
Artist: GIOVANNI MATALONI (1869-1944) Size: 39 x 58 3/4 in./99 x 149.2 cm Istituto Cartografico, Roma Advertising nothing more than a simple gas fixture, this is one of the most important -- and most beautiful -- early Italian Art Nouveau posters. Nude save for a sheer net skirt, a smiling figure holds a giant sunflower in one hand while gesturing toward a levitating gas lamp with the other. The intricate details, from the geometric background to the organic elements of the border, to the tile-like texture of the upper register all make this a two-sheet masterpiece of Italian poster art.
