Artist: ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) Size: 10 1/4 x 16 5/8 in./26 x 42.2 cm Created as a follow-up to his already-successful “Documents Décoratfs,” “Figures Décoratifs” is primarily a teaching tool, designed to educate the viewer on how to render the human body. On each page, he positions a figure into a particular shape -- a circle, a triangle -- or combines it with another body, being sure to incorporate decorative lettering or other ornaments. An endless variety of poses are depicted, mostly with female models. At the time of its publication, reviewers applauded the high quality of the draftsmanship, especially regarding the hands, one of Mucha’s finest talents. Here, in a signed study for what would ultimately be the cover of the album, Mucha presents a coy female artist beginning to draw another female nude as she reclines on a sumptuous bed.
Hand-signed crayon, ink, & gouache drawing. Framed.
