A good 20th century gilt brass and enamel singing bird box by Karl Griesbaum, Triberg, Germany. Of rounded oblong form, the cover with swags and mazarine blue enamelled border framing a hinged cover painted with figures in a wooded landscape, enclosing a pierced filigree liner with pop-up brightly coloured singing and revolving songbird, released via a bird-shaped sliding purchase to the front, decorated to all sides with canted oblong mazarine blue panels within white borders, in foliage-chased surround, the textured underside with winding arbour, 4" wide x 2.5" deep x 2" high, (10cm x 6.5cm x 5cm), sold with bird-shaped winding key. Provenance: this box has remained in the same family for the last thirty years (ex. inf. vendor). A matching example was sold by Bonhams Knowle, 17th October 2006, lot 90.
The back edge of the top has a slight casting flaw - a channel to the inner edge of the border. The enamel flows right to the edge at the corners. Small tarnish spot outside left edge of cover. Bird is in excellent condition and mechanism is fully working (revolves, sings, box cover opens and closes. Mechanism not inspected to any further degree and sold as seen. Enamel to front, back and sides in good order. Overall very good.
