18th century carved powder horn 16-1/2" along the outside curve having a 3" diameter turned base plug. The carving includes a rendition of the British coat of arms, a fish, and the poetic verse "Caleb Hotchkiss the 4th of new haven /mad (made?) in new haven January the 10th 1759/In the Field of Battle I stand vp (up) Stovt (stout)/Whare (where) men Lise (lies) reeking on the Grovnd (Ground)/O I Povder (Powder) with my brother Ball/Most hero Like do conker (conquer) all/When Fire coms (comes) then Soon I am/SPeent (spent) And I dont care what/Is the o vent F I N S". There are traces of additional carving including animals and verse that have worn away from rubbing during carrying. It has dirty untouched ivory patina on the main body, with a long curved age crack that does not affect the carvings, and a dark green from the engrailing to the tip.
