This Historic Sharps Model 1859 rifle manufactured in March-April 1862. This rifle is one of the 2000 Sharps Model 1859 rifles ordered specifically for issue to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooter (U.S.S.) regiments organized and commanded by Colonel Hiram Berdan. The rifle has the distinctive double-set triggers that Berdan specified for the Sharps rifles issued to the USS. In addition to the double-set triggers, the rifle has a front sight block for an angular socket bayonet and folding leaf rear sight with 800 yard center notch. Both of these features are characteristic of USS Sharps rifles. The rifle serial number, "57544", is in the primary serial number range (54390-57574) established by author and historian Wiley Sword for USS Sharps rifles. Sharps rifles serial number 57471 and 57574 are documented as having been issued to Company G, 1st USS in 1862. In addition to the distinctive USS features, the rifle is fitted with the standard Sharps pellet primer and a casehardened iron patch box. The black walnut stock and forearm have an oil finish. The rifle is complete with a scarce Civil War russet leather sling. The barrel is roll-stamped: "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO.
