Description

1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Last Baseball of the Regular Season. "Next year" finally came in 1955 for the long-suffering borough of Brooklyn, which had seen its World Championship aspirations crushed time and time again beneath the pinstriped boot of its neighbor in the Bronx. But while rookie pitcher Roger Craig was aware, on September 25th at Pittsburgh's Forbes Field, that yet another Fall Classic battle with the Yanks was imminent, nobody could have known that this would be the year the Bums would grasp the brass/Championship ring.

A pair of handwritten letters from Craig discuss his acquisition of this ONL (Giles) ball. A selection:

"This was my rookie year and I was bound and determined to get the last ball...I'm not sure if I was the last pitcher or not. I don't have a record of that, but I do no (sic) it is the last ball of the season. Not the World Series."

This handwriting perfectly matches the much older blue fountain pen that spans the sweet spot of the toned horsehide, which reads "Last ball of the Dodgers 1955 season." The ball was originally offered in a 1998 auction of "The Roger Craig Collection" which included Craig's 1955 Championship ring and other Brooklyn treasures. A tremendously important artifact from a season of unparalleled glory. Two letters of provenance from Roger Craig.
