Description
1981 Last Ball of Professional Baseball's Longest Game. Finally!! After thirty-two innings, eight hours and twenty-five minutes, and a nine-week intermission, a victor was decided in a contest between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings of the Triple-A International League. The game had begun on April 18, 1981, but at 4:07 in the morning, with the score still knotted at two runs apiece, the weary umpires determined the conclusion would have to wait for another day. That day came nine weeks later, when Dave Koza of the PawSox singled off of Steve Grilli for a walk-off victory after just eighteen minutes of action.
Presented is the Official International League ball that was struck for Koza's game-winning RBI, notated in fading ink on the sweet spot, "Longest game in baseball history April 17-June 23. Pawsox 3 Rochester 2 R.I, 8 hrs. 25 min." The ball is also autographed by several participants in the marathon battle, notably Koza, future Hall of Famers Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken, Jr., future Red Sox and Mets pitcher Bob Ojeda, Rich Gedman, Marty Barrett and Mike Boddicker. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (autographs). Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (autographs).
