Description
1915 Jerry Travers U.S. Open Presentational Silver Victor's Tray. Engraved oval Tiffany & Co. silver tray. Legend reads: "United States Golf Association Open Championship Baltusrol Golf Club June 15th-18th 1915 Won by Jerome D. Travers." Jerry won his first and only Open at Baltusrol in 1915. With nine holes to play and Tom McNamara in the clubhouse with 298, Jerry needed a thirty-seven to win. He drove out of bounds on the tenth but still made par. He topped his drive on the eleventh but made par once again. He three putted the twelfth but made a birdie on the par 5 fifteenth to regain his one shot lead. Jerry then made three solid pars in a row to secure his victory. Shortly after his victory Jerry decided to retire from competitive golf, feeling as so many did before and after him that it was impossible to play championship caliber amateur golf and earn a living at the same time. True to his word, Jerry did not defend his title in 1916 and never played in the U.S. Open again. A great piece of American golf history. fifty-two troy ounces. Measures 19" diagonally. Very good.
