Description

1913 Hobey Baker Original "Culver" Photographs Lot of 2. Widely recognized as the first American star of ice hockey, Hobey Baker made a name for himself on the rink and the gridiron while attending Princeton University. During WWI, Baker served with the 103rd and the 13th Aero Squadrons and was later promoted to captain and commander of the 141st Squadron. While flying a plane during a test run in 1918, Baker crashed and was killed at the age of 26. Offered here is an extremely scarce pair of original "Culver" press photographs, featuring the Pennsylvania native during his football days with Princeton. The first image pictures Baker kicking a football, while it measures at 4.5x6.5" and has "Capt. Baker, Princeton" noted at the bottom. The second image is a superb closeup shot of Baker, while measuring at 4.5x5.75", while both images present "Culver Service" stampings. Medium wear is exhibited throughout. An esteemed member of the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, NHL Hall of Fame in Toronto and USA Hockey Hall of Fame in Evelith Minnesota, this lot offers a rare opportunity to obtain two of very few pieces that exist representing the gone but not forgotten sports hero.
