Onderdonk's early New York landscapes display a decidedly Dutch Tonalist look, related to those paintings of The Hague School, which were popular in the United States during the last quarter of the 19th century. Moreover, his father's influence-and perhaps even his own Dutch ancestry-plays a larger role in these paintings than those of his eventual master William Merritt Chase. Later, Chase's plein air school freed Onderdonk from the earthier palette of these early paintings.
