Emil James Bisttram (Hungarian, 1895-1976) originally a representational painter, he began using abstract forms and bright colors in his work exhibiting the influence of painter Wassily Kandinsky. Bisttram was the founder of the Taos School of Art and later a founding member of the Transcendental Painting Group in Santa Fe.
