Tom was born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 28, 1930 and named Thomas A. (Allen) Herr. He showed an early interest in art and attended weekend art classes given by the Carnegie Museum of Art for young people. After graduating from high school he majored in fine arts at Miami University of Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the spring of 1953. In the fall of 1953 he was inducted into the US Army and served for two years during the Korean War. After this service he returned to Pittsburgh and became active in the arts community. For several years in the early 1960's he served as vice-president for the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors and did the designing and execution of the announcements for their art shows. He was also active with the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and with the Westmoreland Museum of Art in Greensburg, PA. Tom exhibited with the Society of Sculptors and in the Three Rivers Arts Festival (an annual City of Pittsburgh sponsored art show). He seemed to use his full first name when exhibiting, Thomas Herr. During his long professional career as a designer of industrial displays for trade shows he worked for Gateway Industrial Exhibits, GRS&W and Giltspur. He is currently residing in Pittsburgh in a retirement community.
