Old Master Painting of Cain and Abel

After School of Lorenzo Lotto (Italian, 1480-1556), oil on canvas, 18th century, an old master painting depicting the biblical story of Cain and Abel, unsigned, with inscription stating Italian / after school of L. Lotto written on verso; 21.5 x 27.5 in.

A native of Venice, Lorenzo Lotto's (Italian, 1480-1556) work inspired other artists within the Venetian School. This painting is attributed to the Venetian school because of its warm color palette and dramatic portrayal of the biblical narrative. During the 18th century, the Venetian school style of painting experienced a brief revival.

Condition

Loose canvas, visible stretcher frames, craquelure with flaking in some areas, and with darkened varnish. Never relined and in unrestored condition.
