Exceptional Haida Northwest Native-American Carved and Tacked Winchester Third Model Saddle Ring Lever Action Carbine. Serial no. 289289B, .38-40 caliber, 20-inch barrel with pedestal front sight and ladder-type rear sight. Saddle ring loop [ring missing]. Walnut fore-end ornately carved with inset oblong circles and embellished with inlaid abalone spots. Buttstock with elegantly carved figural face and profusely decorated with brass tacks and iridescent abalone spots. Bottom of fore-end and buttstock with stenciled legend reading: 1904/ Klondike. Wrist re-enforced with rawhide wrap. Aftermarket lever retainer button. Condition: Good as configured. Metal showing a dark brown age patina with scattered light pitting present. Saddle ring and dust cover missing. One lower frame screw missing. Wood with chips, wear and minor hairline cracks. Action needs work. A unique and highly decorative example of the Northwest Native American carver's art.
