Description
Johnny Craig Crime SuspenStories #16 Cover Original Art (EC, 1953). Johnny Craig showcases his mastery of blood-chilling Grand Gigolo gore-fests with this cover thriller for "Who's Next?," one of the most iconic of its era. It was unabashed yelp-yarns such as this that raised the hackles of alarmed anti-comics crusaders such as Dr. Frederic Wertham and U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, and ultimately led to the Comics Code Authority and self-censorship by most of the fifties comics industry. Craig received high praise from his fellow EC editor/writer/artist Al Feldstein, "I always admired Johnny's work. He was the ultimate comic artist as far as I was concerned." A first-rate talent, Craig was at the forefront of hard-boiled, crime noir storytelling. This piece has an image area of 13.5" x 19.5", and other than the original cover logo and blurb stats beginning to come loose, the art is in Excellent condition. Included with the art is an oversized color print of the cover, from Russ Cochran's EC Library series; it measures 9.5" x 13.25", and is in Excellent condition.
