Description

New England scrimshaw whale's tooth, early/mid 19th c., the front decorated with a sailing ship flying an American flag, surmounted by an eagle holding an American flag under a row of thirteen stars, the reverse depicting an oval portrait of Grace Darling amidst timbers, lines, and a distraught sailor pining over her, with sheet music and a floral band, 6 1/4'' h. Provenance: Josephine Dawes, Hightstown, New Jersey.

Condition

Couple small age cracks near base, otherwise excellent condition.
