Description

Apollo 16 Unflown Silver Robbins Medallion Originally from the Alan Bean Family Collection with Signed LOA from Mission Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke. This 35mm sterling silver medal is one of 300 made to commemorate the Apollo 16 flight. Crewmembers Young, Mattingly, and Duke participated in the April 16-27, 1972, mission, the fifth moon landing. The obverse features the mission insignia, an eagle and shield above the moon along with the surnames of the crewmembers. The reverse features the engraved dates. The sterling and Robbins hallmarks are on the rim. In original plastic case. Excellent condition.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Charles M. Duke, Jr" on his letterhead, stating: "On the Apollo missions to the moon each crew designed and had minted sterling silver medallions to commemorate the flight. These medallions became known as the Robbins medallions as the Robbins Company was the manufacturer. Some of these medallions were flown to the moon but most were not flown as each mission had a weight restriction. After the mission, these medallions were distributed to the Apollo Astronauts and their families. This medallion was not flown, but is an original Robbins Medallion made to commemorate the mission. It was presented to the Bean family after the mission."
