View Catalog

Description

Early Apollo Prototype A-4H Spacesuit Extra-Vehicular Thermal Garment with Gloves and Overboots by International Latex. An extremely rare early production external thermal suit from 1965. It consists of six pieces, four with separate ILC tags sewn on. The material is a white, heavily-padded nylon-like cloth. Details as follows:
PANTS- Zipper down left leg with Velcro closures on both legs. Elastic waist band. Approximately 39" long down outside seam. An ILC tag sewn in to the inside back near the waist reads: "ITEM: Apollo Space Suit Thermal Garment - Pants Ident. No. AT-4H-036/ MODEL NO. ILC-036-5/ SIZE Large/ SERIAL 008 DATE 5-24-65/ CONTRACT NO. NAS 9-2820/ Dsgn. & Mfg. for Hamilton Standard by International Latex Corporation". Boldly handwritten in heavy felt-tip below the tag is: "NASA/ 9-1100-152".
JACKET- Velcro and zipper closure down center with elastic at cuffs. Tag sewn in at inside upper neck reads exactly as above save for "Jacket" instead of "Pants". The same handwritten information as above is beneath the tag.
OVERBOOTS, Pair- Each with an internal front zipper, elastic at top, and suede patches on either side of the heel. Overall dimensions are approximately 12" x 20" when laid flat. Each has a tag sewn on the outside near the top that reads as follows: "ITEM: Apollo Space Suit Thermal Garment - Overboot Ident. No. AT-4H-027A (B)/ MODEL NO. ILC-036-5/ SIZE Small/ SERIAL 009 (014) DATE 5-24-65/ CONTRACT NO. NAS 9-2820/ Dsgn. & Mfg. for Hamilton Standard by International Latex Corporation". Boldly handwritten in heavy felt-tip below each tag is: "NASA/ 9-1100-154 (155)".
GLOVES, Pair- Latex-type liners with open fingertips showing the internal liner. Wide cuff. No tagging. The gloves are made of a canvas-like material, unlike the other components.

This outfit represents one step in the evolution of the Apollo spacesuit that took place between 1962 and 1968. Several manufacturers vied for the contract that was awarded to ILC in the summer of 1965. Worthy of the most sophisticated collections. Very fine condition with soiling but no damage or tears noticed.
