Circa 3rd century BC-2nd century AD. A thick discoid stamp seal with transverse piercing, depicting a combat scene: a kilted, bearded warrior fending off a boar with his square shield held at arm's length while thrusting overarm with his spear; below the baseline, four saltires. The iconography appears to be based on the Roman gladiatorial games in which trained fighters fought wild animals. From an old English collection. Stone, 6.09 grams, 22 mm. (1").[No Reserve]
Very fine condition.
