Description

More
(Sir Thomas) Utopia, edited by F.S.Ellis, one of 300 copies on Flower paper, printed in red and black in Chaucer type, wood-engraved borders and initials designed by William Morris, original limp vellum with silk ties, yapp edges, spine titled in gilt, uncut, slight spotting to fore-edge, preserved in later green cloth folder and slip-case, [Peterson A16], 8vo, Kelmscott Press, 1893.

***"Aylmer Vallance...records an amusing anecdote: 'Of the 300 copies issued, 40 had been ordered in advance by an Eton master, with the intention of distributing them as prizes among the boys of the college, but when the work appeared with a compromisingly Socialistic introduction by Morris, the order, from motives of prudence, had to be cancelled. However the copies were all disposed of before a year was out, so Morris did not suffer any loss.'" Peterson.
