Description

Morris (William) Original border design for 'The Well at the World's End',
for border to text at beginning of Book IV, body white over black ink, annotated in pencil "for Mr Keates" within border, and labelled at foot in ink in Sydney Cockerell's neat hand, a few spots and small stains, [Peterson A39, Related Materials (n)], large 4to, Kelmscott Press, 1896.

***C.E.Keates, along with W.H.Hooper and W.Spielmeyer, engraved the borders and initials designed by Morris onto woodblocks. "Cockerell recalled, in a letter to May Morris, 10 February 1936, how they were drawn: 'Your father had two little saucers in front of him. He roughed out his design in pencil - then drew it carefully with his black brush, correcting with white & then agian with black as he went on, & using white over the black for various little details...'" Peterson p.xxxi.
