Description

[Froissart
(Sir John)] Proof sheet of the first page of the projected edition of 'Froissart's Chronicles', printed on vellum in Chaucer type with title in Troy type, with wood-engraved border, large initial and 4 smaller ones designed by William Morris, framed and glazed in oak frame by Morris & Co., T.L.s. from I.E.Hustwick of Bernard Quaritch Ltd. tipped to verso, [Peterson A46], folio, 1897.

***Morris had planned to publish Berners's translation of Froissart for many years and at his death in November 1896 some pages had been set but none printed. A few pages were printed for Morris's friends as a memorial and subsequently 160 copies of the first leaf were printed on vellum for wider distribution. This proof differs from those copies in that it omits completely the first chapter heading which was printed in red and the second chapter heading is here printed in black. It also includes the words "The Intent" written in manuscript in black ink on two slips of paper and mounted running vertically down the right hand side of the large initial. These did not appear in the final printing..
