first edition, signed presentation from the author, 'For Sir Archibald Clark Kerr, wishing him all good things all his life, from his friend Ernest Hemingway, Rangoon, April 21 - 1941' to endpaper, earlier ink inscription to endpaper, original cloth, rubbed and a little toned, 8vo, New York, 1940.

***Sir Archibald Clark Kerr (1882-1951), British Ambassador to China, the Soviet Union and the United States. In his biography Radical Diplomat: Life of Sir Archibald Clark Kerr, Donald Gillies writes how, whilst in Rangoon, Kerr used to regularly swim the Yangtzee River and 'having met Ernest Hemingway at a party dismissed him derisively: "Tough! Why I'm tougher than he is!"'..
