Georgian Tortoiseshell Tea Caddy, first quarter 19th century, the rectangular box with a slightly rounded cover ornamented with an inlaid square of ivory and a matching a square ivory escutcheon, three foil-lined compartments fitted with tortoise lids and ivory knobs, d. 5-1/4", l. 11-3/4".
Scattered patches, tears, puckers and losses to the box overall. The interior compartment lids are warped and the pressed layers of wood are becoming unglued. These lids are later. At one time there was a sugar bowl in the center. Foil exhibits minor wear. Soiled and faded velvet to underside of the box's lid.
