George IV Irish Sterling Silver Cake Basket, hallmarked Dublin, 1825-1826, by Stephen Bergin, of rounded rectangular form with upswept ends, the interior with lower gadrooned band and fluted corners, with applied gadrooned rim quartered by applied shell-and scroll motifs, with conforming openwork swing handle decorated with laurel banding and centering floral-scroll cartouche, the whole raised on a conforming foot, h. 4-1/2" (10-1/4" with handle), l. 12-1/2", w. 9-3/4", 35.57 t. oz.
Overall Condition: Good. Light compression dent on the bottom of the basket corresponding to the foot ring, running about half way around, with two additional 1/2" dents on one side. Several scattered pinpoint dents and dings throughout, none deep and all consistent with age and use. No breaks or repairs noted. Good detail on the rim and handle. Handle cartouche engraved with a crest of a demi-savage with a dagger in one hand and a key in the other (clan Murray). Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the Dublin seated Hibernia, 2) the crowned Harp standard mark, 3) the date letter "e" for Sep. 1825-26, 4) The George IV bust duty mark, and 5) (on the interior rim of the bowl) the "SB" maker's mark of Stephen Bergen. Marks very good.
