Description
K-68 Pre-Civil War era snare drum. Basswood body with a painted portrait of General George Washington on a 9 1/4" x 11 3/4" painted blue panel. Age-toned red legend above Washington's head. Some abrasions to portrait, but basically is presentable. (Probably carried by the Washington County militia). Original red painted hoops. Rope ties with aged leather tension slides. Top skin is intact, bottom one has old sewn repairs and is split. Underside of top skin is penciled "R. Green - Parish N.Y." 12 3/8" tall with a 14 1/4" diameter. With three period, different size drumsticks. (A Dr. Tobias Green, originally from Renssalaer County - next to Washington County, from Parish, N.Y. served as an assistant surgeon with the 110th and 184th Infantry Regiments during the Civil War. We believe that this drum was passed down to and became the property of his son, Roscoe H. Green, who may have belonged to a local militia or band group.) Shows wear, but remains a decorative item of Americana. II-
