E-17 Prussian 1st Garde Regiment of Foot M1896 Parade enlisted miter helmet. Worn by the 1st Battalion. Age darkened silvered brass "tombstone" type frontplate which covers the entire front of the helmet. Relief embossed crown, early Prussian eagle with a "PRO GLORIA ET PARIA" legend, flags/military motifs/floral work and a cypher "FR". M91 style side posts to accommodate flat silver fishscale chinstraps. 3 3/4" high side panels and a large 4 1/8" high back panel - with a relief embossed flaming grenades/military motifs on a small "scale" designed background. Red wool body with white "waffle" tape trim. Leather drawstring liner shows wear. Owners original named label still attached - "Grenadier Nickelen - 5. Komp. 1 Garde - Bat. Z.F.". With original "puschel" (red top white wool cockade). Overall a darkened patina covers the chinscales and the frontplate with "patches" of plum patina. The back and side "bands" show traces of the silver finish. II
