This painting has never been restored or damaged. It is still stretched on its original stretcher. The paint layer may be very slightly dirty, but except for a very thin crack and tiny amount of paint loss in the upper center (about 1/8 inch from the top edge) there are no issues. Johnson has used a transparent glaze to tone various parts of the work and this glaze has not been evenly received by the under-painting in many areas. Thus one sees slight beading of this glaze in the male figure on the far right and in a few other areas throughout the group. All of this is original and has been noted in other works by Johnson from this period. -Simon Parkes, May 2012
