Description

A-7 Imperial German Infantry Line Regiment Standard. Red silk field with a magnificent 6 3/4" x 7 1/2" embroidered gold and silver wire/red silk embellished crown - positioned above a gold bullion legend "PRO GLORIA ET PATRIA". Following is a relief embroidered crowned Prussian eagle, holding a sword and lightning bolts, which boldly dominates the center of the flag. Gold and silver wire used for the detailed crown, beak, sword and lightning bolts highlight the multi-color silk embroidered 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" eagle. All is emphasized by the surrounding gold and silver wire laurel wreath. Black ray outlined white tapered panels emanate from the center to the sides of each corner - which hold a 11" x 9 1/2" gilt embroidered crowned "WR" cypher within a laurel leaf wreath. Relief embroidered stylized 7 1/4" x 2" flaming grenades decorate the center of each of the four large red panels. Two-sided. Overall, the age of the standard is evident by the "off-white" appearance, silk separations and missing two sections (4 1/2" x 2" and 1" x 3") in the white panels near the center. The possibility exists that this red standard could have been carried by the 48th Infantry Regiment "von Stupnagel" or the 97th Rhineland Regiment. An American G.I. Removed this standard from a flagpole in 1945 by cutting the flap. Information acquired from the G.I's family indicates that a "schloss" near Plauen was the source location. When Imperial standards were damaged they were retired, and following the outbreak of WWI the Army "called-in" regimental standards for safekeeping. For one of the above reasons, this standard was probably sent to a storage facility. Worthy of professional restoration. II-
