95: Russian Icon Of The Diesis, Circa 1900, Moscow
A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DEISIS, MOSCOW WORKSHOP, CIRCA 1900. Finely painted on a single shaped wood panel, at center Christ delivers a blessing and holds an open book of Gospels to Matthew 11:28. On the left the Mother of God turned inward in an attitude of prayer and on the right the Holy John the Forerunner. Contained in carved and gilt wood frame with cupola. No doubt a workshop close to Gurianov and probably commissioned for a private home chapel by a wealthy aristocrat. 16 inches x 22.5” inches (40.7 x 57.2cm).
