An important polychrome Chinese ivory pagoda lantern decorated with a family of foo lions at the base; carved in 2 parts, the base depicts a father and mother foo lion with 2 baby foo lions playfully climbing; the column of the pagoda is intricately carved with a floral motif; the center of the column is designed as a series of 14 hanging rings attached to a platform base leading to the top section of the pagoda; the crown of the pagoda is a carved and reticulated band of 9 additional foo lions upon which a series of 6 architectural pediments hang from draped pendulums attached to phoenix bases; the finial is a carved foo lion sitting atop a lotus flower in nearly full bloom; 19"H x 9"W, the solid ivory carving weighs 90 TROY OUNCES. NOTE: This extraordinary carving was gifted to the consignor by an official of the Chinese Government in the 1970s.
