In 1870, after being defeated in Franco-Prussian war (1870-71), France was overflowing with sorrow. The home town of Émile Gallé, was annexed by Germany. Even after the annexation, Gallé chose the motif of red rose, which only bloomed in the Mt Saint-Quentin in the province of Lorraine, as a representation of his deep patriotism, to express his intense sorrow and emotional significance in his series Rose of France - Rose de France. From a huge coupe dedicated to the Mr.Leon Simon - the president of la societe d'Horticulture de Nancy in 1901 which is now exhibited in the Musee de Beaux-Arts de Nancy, there are magnificent examples of Rose de France such as one presented to the Russian emperor in 1902 as the prestigious gift from France.
