Japanese shin-shinto wakizashi (short sword), nagasa (length of blade): 18.825in/48.1cm; signed Suishinshi Masahide saijin (tempered [by]) with kao on the omote, and on the ura Suishinshi Naohide kitae[ru] (forged [by]) and dated Bunsei gannen gogatsu kichinichi (1818.5); sugata (configuration): shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune, torii-zori, blade slightly narrowing, o-kissaki; kitae (forging pattern): fine-packed ko-itame with mokume, jinie and delicate chikei; hamon (tempering pattern): ko-gunome with slightly repeating toran-ba, ending in the monouchi; boshi (tip): komaru; nakago (tang): single hole, sujikai, ha-agari kurijiri; horimono (carving): panel with dragon with a sword (shin no kurikara), reversed by a woman with a sword Koshirae (mounting/fittings): roiro saya (scabbard) with horizontal ribbing at the top and with gold-lined suspension loop (shitodome) for the kurikata; shakudo fuchi-kashira of South Sea islanders, one in attendance on a caparisoned elephant, executed in gold, silver and shakudo takazogan on a fine nanako ground, the tensho signed Hamano Noriyuki and incised seal (first generation, mid-Edo period); shibuichi oval tsuba with an irregular contour carved and inlaid with a design of Gama Sennin sending his spirit into the landscape with a vine-entwined pine to the reverse, the features picked out in gold hirazogan and takazogan and shakudo, signed Reifudo (studio name of Hamano Shozui, mid-Edo period); a pair of gilt/gold menuki formed as Chinese sage presenting a scroll, received by a Japanese courtier to the opposite side; an iron kozuka featuring Kikujido seated at the foot of a waterfall above flowering chrysanthemum, executed in gold and shakudo hirazogan and takazogan on an ishimeji ground, reversed by a signature [Tetsudendo] Shoraku and gold-inlaid seal Toshiyuki (late Edo period), and the steel blade signed Seki Kane[mitsu]; and two notched seppa with gold-foil to one side; and a gilt habaki with a 'cat scratch' (tomoyasuri) accents.
