Self-Portrait. 1983. Vintage gelatin silver print on RC paper from the original negative. 19 x 19 cm (25,5 x 20,2 cm). Titled and copyrighted 1983 Robert Mapplethorpe in black ink by Robert Mapplethorpe in lower margin.
After his photographs had been exhibited at the documenta in Kassel (1977) and at the Frankfurter Kunstverein (1981), Robert Mapplethorpe came to Düsseldorf to show his new work at the 'Photographie-Galerie' in Oberkassel (April 15 - May 31, 1983). According to the gallery announcement Mapplethorpe did portrait commissions between April 20-23. The self-portrait offered here is one of Mapplethorpe's most famous images from this time. - A fine tonal print in near excellent condition.
