Iron blade, 16 3/4" with thickened back and concave sides. Wood grip with iron base ferrule. Typical of the Reconstruction in the immediate post Civil War where less labor intensive crops replaced cotton to some extent. Many of these, and perhaps this one, were made of Confederate swords, some with the blades folded in half and reforged to double thickness for weight an durability. This example conforms to that process and those known examples.
