(Lot 2) Stoneware plate and cup by Shimaoka Tatsuzo (1919-2007), each with the impressed potter's mark on the base; the plate with a sloping interior centered by a mottled brown glazed well encircled by a wide inlaid band of herring-bone pattern, its fitted box inscribed in Japanese with the technique 'jomon zogan', the type of ware, and signed/sealed Tatsuzo, 10.5''d; the ovoid teacup with a flaring rim and waisted foot rim, decorated to either side with abbreviated foliate patterns on a mottled brown ground, 4''h; Provenance: sold on behalf of the Okawachi Trust, Fairfield, CA; Note: Shimaoka Tatsuo was designated a Living National Treasure in 1996. He is famous for developing a rope-impressed technique inspired by the Korean Yi Dynasty and ancient Jomon pottery, which he called Jomon Zogan.
