A choice Predynastic black-ware cosmetic jar, Naqada II, c. 3650 - 3300 BC, perfectly crafted to fit comfortably in the hand. The body ovoid with a near pointed base and the shoulders quite steep with a very small mouth, too small for the finger, and only accessible by an instrument of some kind. Nicely burnished surfaces which are smooth and very even, only a few small areas where it has fallen away. H: 3 3/8" (8.6 cm). Intact and a great example. Ex Los Angeles private collection. Cataloguer note: As a potter myself I can only marvel at the quality of workmanship in this small vessel. It is hand-built, not wheel thrown, the symmetry and feel leaving no doubt that both aesthetics and function where considered by a very high-skilled craftsman.
