Tipton View Of The "Dead At Devil's Den" Taken From One Of The Spurious P. S. Weaver Images. Believed for over a hundred years to actually be views taken of dead soldiers at Devil's Den immediately after the battle, the research of William Frasanito, presented in his 1975 book "Gettysburg; A Journey In Time" established for the first time that the images were actually fakes, and were perpetrated by Weaver using soldiers from the Lincoln honor guard at the November cemetery dedication, and not of actual battle dead. Generally only seen as stereos and rarely seen as prints in this large format, these were doubtless pulled by Tipton by 'pirating' the Weaver views. Image 5 1/2" X 7 3/4" on 11" X 14" mount. Shows two civilians, one of them believed to be Weaver walking among the soldiers feigning death. "Devil's Den" scratched into the negative with period ink script ID below. Also period ink script ID on verso "Dead at Devil's Den" along with Tipton's small ink stamp "Tipton / Gettysburg, Pa." Image with just some slight fading, mount fine. A very rare image particularly in this format.
