Description
Fine Condition, Very Rare, Original Flintlock U.S. M1830 Springfield Cadet Musket, Springfield 1830, with Original Bayonet. Serial #12. 40 1/4" , 54 cal. smoothbore barrel with "P" in cartouche, eaglehead and "v" at breech, tang dated "1830. Lockplate marked forward of the hammer with American eagle with shield over US, and at the tail SPRING / FIELD / 1830. Very fine walnut stock exhibiting no cartouches. The front trigger guard tang exhibits a small "C" with the heel of the buttplate marked "US". Metal overall very fine with smooth light gray patina and exhibiting traces of the original acid brown and case colors. The stock exhibits a coat of varnish that is obviously very old and very likely period. The original angular socket bayonet measures 18 7/8" and is marked "US / EE" at the ricasso and "16" on the socket. Bayonet smooth with mixed gray and brown patina. Specifically designed with these diminished proportions to the standard military issue muskets of the period, for use by cadets at West Point. A total of only 307 were produced under the direct order of the Secretary of War, with only 153 having the 40 1/4" barrel. An extreme rarity in US military longarms in superb condition.
