Family CDV Album with Military Subjects
An untouched wartime compilation comprising 19 military views—mostly common generals—among an array of civilian photographs, some identified, all housed in a rare 4.5 x 6.0 in. album having fancy gutta percha boards in a geometric pattern.
The common generals are: Grant (lithograph), McClellan & Wife, Sherman (litho), Burnside, Meade (litho), Sheridan (litho), two different views of McClellan, Hancock (litho), Banks, Burnside, Sheridan (litho), and Pleasanton.
Additionally, there are five unidentified soldiers including an infantry private with Lancaster, PA backmark, an artilleryman, a post-war view of a young New York military school cadet, a private with Mauch Chunk, PA backmark, and a vignette of a private with brass PHG on his kepi indicating Potomac Home Guard. Also, a lithograph of Lincoln with two composites entitled President and Cabinet and Presidents of the US. Plus, the popular view of Sergeant Humiston’s Children of the battlefield—Frank, Frederick and Alice.
The rare album has a typical leather spine with thermoplastic boards and brass hardware.
CDVs uniformly VG. Interior pages clean, several with minor tears. Strong gilding. Album shows minor shelf wear with chipped top corners, else in extraordinary condition given its utilitarian usage.
