[NEWSPAPER] Continental Journal Announcing End to Revolutionary War
Continental Journal, Boston, MA, dated Feb. 27, 1783, 9.75 x 15.5 in. Inside page (page 3) features large bold headline: PEACE, with news of the signing of the preliminary Peace Treaty between the United States and Great Britain, thus ending the Revolutionary War. This is the earliest news report that we have seen in an American newspaper announcing the end of the Revolutionary War.
The front page features a printing of the speech by British King George III, which was given on Dec. 5, 1783, announcing that Great Britain had decided to declare the United States FREE and INDEPENDENT STATES. At the end of the speech, which fills three columns of text, the printer inserted his own reaction to King George's speech declaring the US independent: What think ye of the AMERICAN CONGRESS NOW?
Expected folds and wear along edges; few inked notes in margins.
