Drexel, Francis Martin [American/Pennsylvania, 1792-1863] oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, the painting is signed under the relined canvas and is documented in an addition to the back of the painting. Purchased from the Estate of David Scull Bispham of Philadelphia in 1928. Drexel was a prominent 19th-century portrait painter whose painting career began in Europe, continued in Philadelphia and in South America for an extended period of time. He also became a banker and was the founder of the brokerage house, Drexel & Company in Philadelphia. 29.75”x23.5”
The condition report is as follows. 1. Frame is not original. 2. Stretcher appears to be original. 3. Some inpainting in many places in background around the subject. 4. Minor inpainting to forehead and nose. 5. Some inpainting to left cheek approx.. 1” x 1/2” 6. The painting appears to have been professionally restored and has had a light coat of varnish applied.
