Inscribed on verso: J.S. June 1908. PROVENANCE: The John Sloan Trust; Kraushaar Galleries, 724 Fifth Avenue, New York 10019. EXHIBITION: "The Art of John Sloan, 1871-1951"; Bowdoin College, Walker Art Museum, Brunswick, ME, 20 January – 28 February 1962. LITERATURE: "John Sloan's Oil Paintings; Catalogue Raisonné, (1991)". Pg. 85 no. 107; "The Early Landscapes of John Sloan" by Grant Holcomb III (1969), diss., 340-341, no. 17. Sloan alludes to the work "Hudson From the Palisades" in his diary entry of 16 June, 1908,describing the vantage point as being "….from the top of the Palisades looking down at a sort of apron of ground made by the earth dredged some years ago from the Spuytin Duyvil creek which was put here by the contractors of that work." Historical records indicate that Sloan spent part of his summer holiday at a house in Coytesville between June 16 and July 3, 1908.
Condition reportFour spots of inpainting < 1/8 inch in size, otherwise good condition consistent with age. Re-lined.
