Description

[Mexico]. Vicente Riva Palacio & Manuel Payno. El Libro Rojo 1520-1867. Mexico: Diaz de Leon y White, 1870. 1st edition. Folio. [2],153pp, plus lithograph title page and 38 lithographed plates – one plate hand-colored, “La Peste (1577)”. Lithographs by Hernandez and Iriarte. The Red Book honors those lives sacrificed throughout Mexican history including horrors committed by Spaniards and the Mexican Inquisition.

Condition

Bound by Escamilla and Cerletti (their sticker on front pastedown) in full red morocco with geometric recessed panels, gilt emblem centered on each cover enclosed in oval raised form, accented with black and gilt, 5-bands to spine with gilt ornaments and letters, gilt dentelles and silk endpapers. Overall lightly soiled, spine ends and corners moderately worn, short split to lower rear joint, light stains to endpapers, “surplus duplicate” stamped on recto of title leaf.
