OUTSTANDING STRASBURG, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt glazed, approximately 4 gallon capacity, elongated ovoid form with an angled-collar rim and slightly arched tab handles. Exuberant brushed bright cobalt decoration comprising tripartite leaves, flowers, vines and plumes full round, additional cobalt on top of handles. Attributed to the shop of John and James Miller, Strasburg, VA. Circa 1830-1840. 15" H, 8" D rim.

Catalogue Note: An outstanding example of early stoneware production in Strasburg. A closely related example with a presentation inscribed Strasburg, W. Miller and 1833 was sold by JSE/GVA on 6/21/03, lot 1001 for $34,000.
Undamaged except for a chip and several flakes to handles and a shallow chip at base.
