Description

STAMPED "H.C. SMITH / ALEX A / D C", ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE JAR, salt glazed, approximately 4 gallon capacity, bold ovoid form with single incised ring, rounded rim, and arched tab handles, straight cut-off lines under base. Exuberant brushed cobalt decoration comprising a horizontal floral vine on front, three seven-petal vertical leaves on reverse, and a single five-petal leaf below each handle, additional cobalt at handle terminals. Strong full mark. Hugh Charles Smith's Wilkes Street pottery. Circa 1830-1847. 14 1/2" H, 6 1/4" D rim, 7 1/2" D base.
Literature: Variation of Wilder - Alexandria, Virginia Pottery, p. 320, Mk. VII with a period after the upper C and no period between lower D and C.
Provenance: From a Virginia private collection.

Condition

Outstanding condition with only a moderate chip to one handle and a flake to the other.
