“A Glimpse of the Sea” watercolor on board, signed John Reginald Goodman (1878 – 1949) lower right. Beautiful seascape painting invites the viewer to feel the sea breeze in their face and smell the coastal air of the southern beaches of England. Note the sophisticated play of color, light and natural themes – including the rabbit in the foreground and the sailboats in the distance. A great way to commune with nature and celebrate the artisanship of this 19th Century English Master artist. This fine piece bares its title “A Glimpse of the Sea” Rustington Sussex June 1904 verso. Circa 1904. Rustington is a beach town between Portsmouth and Brighton on the English Channel. Includes period turn of the century custom hand carved gilt hardwood frame and period glass. (Please note evidence of some repairs on frame.) Dimensions: 19” X 23” with frame, 14.5” X 10.5” without. Strong demand for Goodman works is demonstrated by such recorded public wholesale dealer sales as the price of $836 for the smaller (9.5” X 6.75”) watercolor “Eventide, Norfolk Broads/Spring Morning” Lot # 3 Christie’s London, April 9th, 1998. This comp. price per square inch ($13.04) applied to the subject piece would set its price at $1,985.
Good condition commensurate with age.
