Original signed William H. WILKE Woodblock Print CA Gold Rush SUTTER’S MILL

William Hancock Wilke (American, 1879-1958): Penciled signed and titled, SUTTER’S MILL. The subject and depiction of this woodblock print is that of the California Gold Rush (1848–1855) which began when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. Note the figures to the left of the tree at the creeks edge next to the mill.
Printed with brown ink on buff brown paper measuring overall 14 1/2 inches high by 11 3/4 inches wide beneath brown mat site 12 7/8 inches high by 10 3/8 inches wide, framed in a gesso and wood gilt frame with brown velvet inner liner 18 1/2 inches high by 14 1/2 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches deep behind glass.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the Wilke family.

Bio: William Hancock Wilke, largely a self-taught artist, studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute under Arthur Mathews and later received a scholarship to study in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens. He is remembered as an artist whose etchings, paintings, drawings, land and seascapes depicted various aspects of California life.
Member of the California Society of Miniature Painters; San Francisco Art Association; California; Society of Etchers.
Exhibited at Mark Hopkins Institute (April 1906); Panama Pacific International Exposition of 1915 (gold medal); Calif. Statewide (Santa Cruz), 1928; Oakland Art Gallery, 1932; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1940.

Condition

Condition: Print was dismantled for inspection and found to be in very good condition, attached at top to mat board by masking tape center with addition taps of archival tape top left, right and bottom center with very slight toning (concealed beneath) from non-acid free matting to outer margins.
