sinew sewn, 40 x 6-1/2 in. Folds, minor losses; letters of provenance with holes, tears, tape repairs and losses. Provenance: Given in 1949 to Joseph E. Kanipe, son of Sgt. Daniel Kanipe, 7th U.S. Cavalry under George A. Custer, by P. R. Barbour, originally acquired in 1930 from Great Falls, Montana, relic dealer Thomas M. Hannah who acquired it from Dan Lone Chief, in whose family it descended and by whom it was believed to be the war belt worn by Sitting Bull during the battle with Custer at Little Bighorn; with three letters of provenance dated 1930 and 1949 from Dan Lone Chief, Hannah, and Barbour, 8 x 5 in. to 10 x 8 in.
