Description

Medals
1901 William McKinley ASSASSINATED Memorial Medal
William McKinley Memorial Medal. Struck in Bronze. About Mint State.
76 mm. Unlisted in Julian, although this appears to have been made at the U.S. Mint, especially since the engraver of the piece was none other than Charles E. Barber (his name appears on the truncation). Struck in yellow-bronze, indicating a late 20th century striking, some cabinet friction and somewhat mottled mahogany color on the reverse. Obv: large bust left of McKinley, “WILLIAM” to the upper left, “McKINLEY” to the upper right. Rev: Multiline inscription “INAUGURATED / PRESIDENT OF THE / UNITED STATES / MAR 4 1897 / SECOND TERM / MAR 4 1901 / ASSASSINATED / SEP 6 1901 / DIED SEP 14 / 1901”. Lady Liberty in classic Greek dress poses with a downcast sad appearance, an American Heraldic Eagle adorned Shield at her side touches the ground on this example.
